How Interrelated are Social Workers in your Life?

Hi again everyone!

This is my first official blog post discussing how I feel about what I have learned so far!  I can say for certain that I did not know how widespread Social Workers are within our lives (they are everywhere!) until now.

Growing up, I knew that my Mom was a Social Worker prior to having children, but we never went into much detail about what her job was about.  Since becoming an adult and needing to try and determine what I wanted to do with my life, I turned to my university classes, as well as talking to my parents about their previous/current careers.  When my Mom discussed her job with Social Work, I wanted to learn more about what it all entails (which led to my enrolment within my Social Work class). 

Since beginning to learn about the course material, this field is not subjected to limitations on how it is pursued.  I am currently taking a BSc in Anthropology and it surprised me that it shared many Social Work theories and methods.  After learning this, it shows like many other social sciences, everything is interrelated! (Hick & Stokes, 2017)

Like I said at the beginning of this post, Social Workers are everywhere within our lives.  When I learned this in both my readings and lectures, it surprised me how little I knew about this field.  After reviewing module one, I began to extend my thinking further, just to see how interrelated individuals are with Social Workers.  Not only do they work with all forms of human relationships (individuals, families, corporations, etc.) but they can also help us in every stage of our lives (as babies, adolescence's, young parents, seniors).  These people who we think just happen to be there when we need them are actually trained professionals, who believe in your strengths so you can then believe in yourself!  How cool and inspiring is that if you want to pursue it in your future! (Hick & Stokes, 2017) (TEDx Talks, 2015)

Since beginning this class, this material has allowed me to really reflect and understand how essential Social Workers are in our lives.  Take a second to think about if there is anyone that was there for you at some point in your life.  It could be at school, work, or in the hospital to name a few.  If there was, and they sound similar to what I have expressed above, it was likely a Social Worker!
