At What Level Do Social Workers Participate in Your Life?

Hello everyone!

Social Work continues to amaze me in ways that I did not think that it could.  It has not only made me want to continue to learn more about this field, but it has also allowed me to learn more about myself!

While I have previously learned portions about Freud's Psychodynamic Theory / Approach in the past, I did not learn enough to continually engage with it in my life.  By learning more about it now, I have found ways to interpret this theory to better understand the defence mechanisms that are associated with an individuals goals or wishes.  While it initially sounds confusing, by looking at the three steps: Wish -> Fear -> Defence, it tells us how every individual goes through these steps at different stages in their lives!  While I did not know this before, it now seems natural to think about it and associate it with our defence mechanisms with an ideal wish or goal that you set out for. (Ngo, 2020)

Although this theory can be used in multiple fields in social sciences, Social Workers use it to help an individual or group reflect and understand how their fears can hold them back from achieving their goals.  Without the roles of Social Workers in all different positions (Micro, Mezzo, and Macro Levels) we would not know how to understand ourselves and the people and communities around us! (Hick & Stokes, 2017)

Both this theory and the module helped me better reflect the world around us.  Social Work has been at the forfront of helping to improve the overall history of health services for all ages of Canadians, but it is also able to help benefit people at an international level.  This continues to show how Social Work occurs at all levels in a society!

This is a sign for you to really reflect and understand how often you may go to a Social Worker for help in your life.  They are available at every stage in your life, as well at different levels (individual, family, community, etc.)

During this time between modules, I will continue to actively engage and reflect on how different our society would be without the involvement of Social Workers.  You should too!
