Ethics and Values in Social Work

 Hi again everyone,

I hope you have been doing well since my last blog post.

Since learning about Social Work within diverse populations in Canada, I was curious as to what some of the ethics and regulations may look like, luckily this module was all about it!

When reading from the Canadian Association Social Work (ACSW) Code of Ethics, Values, and Guiding Principles, it was interesting to learn more about the specific ethics that Social Workers in Canada focus on to help them with their practices.  After reviewing them, I found it great to find that there are specific values for human relationships at all levels, including creating specific values for the lives of our Indigenous communities throughout the country! It was really nice to see that Social Workers maintain and continue to promise the kindness and commitment that we saw throughout all the other modules thus far. (CASW, 2024)

One thing that both surprised me and helped me really reflect to understand the ethics and values that Social Workers are faced with is the events of a Medically Assisted in Dying events that are legal in Canada (Perrault et al, 2024).  While listening to the video about the dilemmas that Social Workers need to face in these situations allowed me to expand my research to learn more about what exactly Assisted Dying is like in Canada.  While I knew it was a thing priorly, I never thought too much on how challenging it may be for not only the client, but also the people that are experiencing this alongside them.  While a Social Worker may not directly agree with what is happening, they need to focus on helping their client.  I think that this relates to what I discussed in my blog post, 'How Interrelated are Social Workers in your Life', Social Workers are truly amazing at the capabilities they can do and are superhero's!

After reading the ACSW Code of Ethics, Values, and Guiding Principles, I now have a better understanding on the things that I would need to look at, maintain, and help me become the best Social Worker that I can be to clients that I may encounter.  I think it is great to have an understanding of these ethics and values for not only a profession in this field, but also to be able to transfer these ethics and values to help me in another career.  (CASW, 2024)

If you have not already viewed the recent code of ethics and values that the CASW released this year, I recommend reading it.  I placed a link to the direct website into my references section at the bottom of my post.  I think that even if you do not care about the values behind Social Workers, I think that reading these values can create any person in our society to become a better person by reading and following these goals!

Until next time friends!
